Unless you get ridiculously lucky, it is much better to get the box and sell it. Hypercrates go for tens of millions of credits, but unless you get lucky and get a platinum item (people have gotten like 4 or 5 hypercrates without getting a single platinum item) or a really sought after gold item (Revan Reborn set, for example) you will make more credits by selling the hypercrate (also, you will get even more if you open the hypercrate and sell the individual boxes as well, just will take longer).

How much you might get for anything will vary, depending on what server you are on. And on any given server, prices may vary wildly, from day to day, hour to hour...

 

And remember, just because someone lists an item for tens of millions of credits, doesn't mean the item ever actually sells for that much.
